The Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Clinilabs Sleep Disorders Institute is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and is pending sponsorship by the New York Medical College, an institution accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
There are seven faculty members who provide training and supervision to sleep medicine fellows, Collectively, these individuals have more than 100 years of experience in the field of sleep medicine; enabling fellows to tap into a substantial knowledge base. Members of the faculty have primary specialties in the areas of pulmonary/critical care medicine, neurology, cardiology, adult and child psychiatry, and clinical psychology, and core members are board certified in sleep medicine. This provides fellows with exposure to the field from a wide variety of perspectives. Adjunct or Medical College faculty provide experiences through an ENT rotation, as well as through a planned inpatient rotation scheduled to begin in the 2007/2008 academic year.
Fellows are closely supervised by faculty in all aspects of their work. Throughout the fellowship year, much time is devoted to one-on-one supervision of the initial consultations and follow-up visits that fellows perform, as well as group mentorship in the Institute’s daily case conference. All of this provides for an intensive learning experience that is consistent with the field’s best academic traditions. Regular lectures are provided by the Institute’s core faculty members, as well as by visiting professors who are invited to deliver presentations in their areas of expertise.
Fellows enjoy several advantages by attending a training program that is in the heart of New York City. The Institute’s referral base is large and its patient population is diverse, enabling fellows to gain experience in the evaluation and treatment of the full spectrum of sleep disorders in all age groups. When off duty, fellows enjoy the vibrancy, entertainment, and professional stimulation of one of the greatest cities in the world. New York is home to 9 academic research institutions, 26 additional research institutions and medical centers, 175 hospitals, research centers and laboratories, and more than 29,000 physicians. There have been 118 Nobel laureates who have studied, taught, or worked in New York City.
Research is an important aspect of the fellowship year. As stipulated by the AASM, individual research projects are a required component of training. These projects are conducted under the supervision of faculty mentors, and often lead to the presentation of papers at professional meetings or publication in peer-reviewed journals.
